Position Purpose

Leads the office of Advancement Communications, developing communications and content strategies in all media that advance the strategic goals of the Alumni Relations and Development programs. Collaborates throughout the Advancement Division to realize high impact volunteer support, deep alumni engagement, and the full philanthropic potential of our constituencies, keeping Dartmouth competitive with other not-for-profit institutions and organizations by implementing an integrated, market-oriented communications program.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities
  • Provides innovative thought leadership around audience segmentation, content strategy, target messaging, and activation and engagement programs to advance the strategic goals of our Alumni Relations and Development programs and complements the overall Dartmouth communications strategy. Ensures that communications to alumni and other external constituencies reflect the mission, values and strategic objectives of the President and his administration. Creates a client-centered communications organization that reaches deeply into its client community (alumni, parents, donors) to understand and evaluate communications. Works collaboratively with program directors throughout Alumni Relations and Development to develop and execute program-specific and overarching marketing and engagement strategies. Oversees the provision of internal and external design, writing, editing, graphics, and production, in a range of media from traditional to state-of-the-art digital and film media. Identifies appropriate metrics to measure and track success of communications programs, making changes and redirecting strategies as needed. 60%
  • Hires, manages and motivates a skilled and experienced marketing and communications staff. Leads a high-performing, integrated team; effectively drives change and consistently delivers excellence with diplomacy, professionalism, and high integrity. The AVP leads expertly through persuasion and cultivates and sustains productive, trusting, and collaborative relationships with leaders, faculty and staff throughout the College and its schools. Ensures a culture where effective teamwork, collaboration, creativity and innovation are expected, recognized and rewarded. Facilitates a culture of inclusion of ideas, approaches, outside inputs, etc. Leads by example with regard to appropriate risk-taking, cross-organizational cooperation and clear standards of conduct. 20%
  • Working closely with the Director of Market Research for Advancement, designs and implements market research and evaluation, proactively and in response to program strategies. Embeds into the communications program the data learned through research and evaluation and develops marketing plans that respond to research findings and changing trends. Remains current on trends and innovations in Development and Alumni Relations, as well as the communications strategies and best-practices services offered by other non-profits. 10%
  • Acts as communications and marketing liaison with other College/professional school Advancement offices, including the Geisel School of Medicine, the Tuck School of Business and Thayer School of Engineering and the College's Office of Communications. 5%
  • Oversees Advancement Communications budget; monitors expenditures. 5%
