Overview

The person in this role serves as tactical lead on the Institute's social media channels, executing strategies that elevate the organization's work on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. They will be responsible for growth of the channels, engagement on each platform, and representing the Aspen Institute brand with fidelity across platforms. This person also will actively track digital metrics, reporting back on successes and opportunities for improvement, and helping inform a holistic, iterative digital strategy. This position also actively partners with the Institute's 75+ policy programs, major events like the Aspen Security Forum and Aspen Ideas Festival, and an internal editorial team to develop and execute cross-channel content marketing campaigns.

The Institute's communications team also serves as an in-house agency that provides communications and marketing support to the Institute's 70+ programs, public events, fundraising efforts, and the President's office. Learn more at aspeninstitute.org.

Position Overview

The Digital Content Associate will lead the tactical implementation of digital content for the Aspen Institute's channels, with a focus on the organization's flagship social media channels (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram) and supporting on email and web content creation. This person leads day-to-day posting and engagement, as well as tracking and reporting on metrics. The associate also acts as the go-to person at the Institute for social media expertise and advice across our 75+ policy programs, offering training, resources, and customized social media products for colleagues upon request. The person in this role is integral to the editorial team, helping ideate and develop new digital content, working collaboratively with the video, graphic design, and media teams in the Communications Department.

Key Responsibilities

Create social media and digital content to encourage understanding of the Institute's mission and engagement across our audiences, with daily curation across platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.

  • Develop and refine copy for a variety of digital content including social media and email

  • Develop and implement an editorial calendar for the Institute's social media channels

  • Collaborate with graphic design and video teams as well as other communications staff on the development of digital multimedia assets

  • Identify opportunities to elevate content across the Institute, finding opportunities to share the programs' work and original content that aligns with news and trends

  • Monitor real-time social media alerts for mentions of the Institute and its work, working with the director to follow up when appropriate

  • Contribute to the Institute's email and other digital products, including Five Best Ideas of the Day

Track and report on social media and digital content metrics to benchmark and improve performance.

  • Create and present professional analytics reports to demonstrate effectiveness of social media and other digital channels

  • Dig into metrics to better understand the Institute's digital audiences, analyzing that data to optimize storytelling and convey the organization's mission

  • Use a data-driven approach to grow social media followings on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram

Coordinate with colleagues across the Institute's 75+ programs and projects to elevate their news and work, while also training and supporting program staff around their own digital content creation.

  • Act as primary point of contact for the Institute's programs related to social media requests. Build relationships with internal program teams to develop a deep understanding of their programs' needs, goals, and priorities

  • Project manage a sometimes heavy workflow of requests from both the central Institute and across our programs and projects

  • Contribute to the development of Institute-wide social media best practices and help organization communicators understand and implement it

  • Lead trainings for Institute communications employees on social media, email, and other digital content best practices.

  • Keep abreast of the latest digital trends to inform creative approaches and aid internal knowledge sharing

Knowledge, Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • At least three years of professional experience with progressive responsibility for a digital strategy and campaign execution, preferably at a digital or creative agency, nonprofit or association

  • Demonstrated ability to develop cross-channel (web, email, social media) digital content strategies that meet organizational goals

  • Demonstrated ability to work individually and collaboratively across a large nonprofit organization to develop and refine creative digital content ideas

  • Experience developing and executing issue-driven digital engagement campaigns about a wide range of topics

  • Exceptional skill with written and verbal communications, particularly on tight deadlines.

  • Sharp attention to detail and ability to check work for accuracy and completeness.

  • Ability to see a project from start to finish via excellent project management processes.

  • Strong working knowledge of the social and digital ecosystem

  • Proven ability to meet deadlines, juggle multiple projects, and work independently in a fast-paced environment

  • Experience with analytics platforms, including Google Analytics and the Facebook and Twitter pixels; social media management tools such as Buffer or Hootsuite. Experience with email and CRM systems such as Salesforce, iContact, MailChimp, a plus

  • Ability to analyze and synthesize data from all digital channels, drawing insights from the data to inform future recommendations and strategies

  • Exceptional judgment and professionalism when working with team members, partner organizations, and vendors

  • Ability to work independently and well with a diverse group of people throughout the organization

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to complete projects and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Flexible, positive, collaborative, action-oriented attitude.

  • Must be willing to occasionally work a flexible schedule to support the Institute's work during major events and roll-outs

  • Must be willing to travel to provide social media coverage at hallmark events, such as the Aspen Ideas Festival, Aspen Security Forum, and others
