Position Summary

The department of Foundational Health Sciences in The Chicago Medical School/Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science is seeking an Assistant Professor of Physiology. This individual will be responsible for teaching physiological sciences in the systems-based medical curriculum. The individual will also work as part of a team to develop interactive case- and team-based learning activities, as well as interact with and mentoring medical and graduate students. Faculty duties will also include engaging in institutional and professional service.

The applicant should provide a curriculum vitae, a letter of interest, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, and names of three individuals who are familiar with applicants teaching ability and can provide letters of reference.

Who We Are

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS) is a five-college graduate health sciences university dedicated to the interprofessional education of health and biomedical professionals. Chicago Medical School, the original college of the five, has been educating physicians and furthering biomedical research for more than 100 years. Established in 1912, the founders built a combined medical school and hospital where working men and women could study medicine at night.

As a community-based institution, CMS students experience a variety of clinical environments and models; including, inner-city and suburban hospitals, the James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center that serves U.S. military personnel, as well as private clinics and practice settings. Training focuses on positioning patients at the center of care and as an active member of the healthcare team. During student didactic training, CMS simulation labs allow students to sharpen their interactive and communication skills and develop critical reasoning. Students have early clinical contact, experience a supportive environment, and can count on a faculty dedicated to student success.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Teaching of physiology in the systems-based medical curriculum.
  • Work closely with basic scientists and clinicians to develop an integrated curriculum.
  • Be involved in leadership development and direct a physiology system block in the near future.
  • Supervise and mentor medical students in a variety of learning activities.
  • Serve on assigned committees as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Discipline Chair, Physiology.

Role of Faculty member at RFUMS.

All full-time faculty members employed by RFUMS are expected to engage in activities that are considered core to their primary role as a faculty member. These activities may include teaching, scholarly activity, and service.

Teaching responsibilities vary and may include:
  • Direct instruction
  • Curriculum management
  • Assessment
  • Advising and mentoring for students

Scholarly activities vary and may include:
  • Original scholarship
  • Grant procurement
  • Research mentoring

Service activities vary and may include internal and external contributions through:
  • Committees
  • Contributions to the profession
  • Recruitment
  • Direct patient care

Scholarly activities and/or clinical activities are negotiated and determined at the department level and are primarily based upon the faculty track.

Required Education & Experience
  • PhD in physiology or a closely related field.
  • Experience in teaching physiology at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • Experience in team-based learning approaches to instruction.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of systems-based medical curriculum
  • Ability to prioritize and organize numerous and varied assignments.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to quickly learn various Educational Learning Management System software.
  • Display professionalism, and maintain confidentiality and privacy.
  • Work/interact with diverse populations and be sensitive to cultural differences.
  • Value teamwork

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of endocrine and reproductive physiology.
  • Experience in Medical Education Curriculum development.
  • Experience with teaching methods including interactive large and small groups and case-based learning
