Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Assistant Photographer position. The Assistant Photographer is a full-time, one-year term position, open to recent Amherst College graduates. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

Reporting to the Photographer/Photography Services Manager, the Assistant Photographer is responsible for completing photography assignments, both independently and collaboratively, under the direction of the Photographer/Photography Services Manager, and for editing and archiving photos. The Assistant Photographer captures, prepares, and distributes images that showcase the college's diverse community that will be used in print, social media, and online; assists in maintaining the digital asset management system; and collaborates with a diverse team of writers, designers, and digital specialists in the Communications Office to visually portray Amherst College to the world through images of its diverse people, places, and events.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Photography Services Manager in shooting events that require two photographers. This may include photographing an event alongside the photographer or assisting during shoots that require lighting and studio setups.
  • Shoots solo assignments as directed or approved by the Photographer/Photography Services Manager. Subjects may include campus news and events, student activities, individual or group portraits, landscapes, architecture, and sporting events.

  • Edit photos, ensuring that they received on time and in the correct format for use in the intended publication channel. Batch rename photos, add captions and keywords for future searches.
  • Edit photos for archival purposes to include in the digital asset management system.

  • A recent graduate of Amherst College with a bachelor's degree in art, film, and media studies, or related field. In lieu of an arts-related degree, experience working on campus as a student photographer will be considered.
  • Experience working as a photographer.
  • Experience using professional-grade digital cameras (DSLRs) shooting in RAW format.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and to effectively contributing to an inclusive culture for all.
  • Experience using Adobe Lightroom photo editing software (or ability to learn quickly), in order to create an organized digital workflow, including ingesting images, renaming photos, adding captions and keywords, developing digital images, and exporting files.
  • Good file management experience (or ability to learn quickly).
  • Strong verbal, and written communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and communicate effectively with a diverse set of students, their families, faculty and staff, alumni, visitors, and guests.
  • Able to work independently, with direction, and as part of a team in an environment with frequently changing demands.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including frequent weekends and evenings.
  • Experience working as a campus photographer.
  • Knowledgeable of photographic needs related to social media.
  • Experience shooting video with DSLR cameras.
  • Experience editing video with Adobe Premiere Pro.
  • Valid driver's license.
