Job Description:

The Admission Counselor position is open to current Amherst College seniors or recent graduates. The Admission Counselor is a full-time, two-year term position, job group and level PT-1. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Admission Counselor is an integral position within the active and collaborative Admission Office team. The Counselor serves as one of 15 members of the admission committee and is a valued and full contributor throughout the admission cycle.

The Admissions Counselor holds significant responsibility within Visitor Relations and Diversity Outreach Programs that affects the success of Admission efforts .

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Recruitment and Admission:
  • Conduct presentations for diverse groups of up to 250 visiting prospective students and their families
  • Develop recruitment strategies and coordinate travel in assigned geographic markets
  • Oversight of recruitment travel and communication
  • Develop and build relationships with Community-Based Organizations within assigned specific geomarkets
  • Responsible for directing alumni volunteer recruiting efforts in assigned geographic markets
  • Serve on application evaluation teams within assigned geographic markets
  • Full voting member of admission committee
  • Use good judgment in decision making to advance the priorities of the college
Visitor Relations (responsibilities supervised by Coordinator of Visitor Relations)
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and manage student tour guides
  • Manage tour guide training program and best practices for approximately 60 tour guides
  • Select and supervise head tour guides
  • Develop and maintain tour guide manual
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and facilitate the day to day duties of the summer interns
  • Coordinate special group campus visits
  • Analyze campus visitor experience

Diversity Outreach (responsibilities supervised by the Diversity Outreach Program Coordinator)
  • Facilitate the day to day duties of the Diversity Interns
  • Provide primary support on a team in the planning and execution of two April Admitted Student Open Houses, one Native Student Open House, and two fall Diversity Student Open Houses
    • managing the Overnight Student Hosting Program: overseeing the recruitment and training of student hosts, facilitating the matching process
    • facilitate in arranging faculty panels, securing on-campus entertainment and programming, and
    • assisting with the coordination of complex travel logistics including communication on a large scale

Assist with the execution of a Transfer Open House
Coordinate annual teacher recognition book award program

Miscellaneous Programs
  • Assist with the execution of a Transfer Open House

  • Recent Bachelor's Degree from Amherst College
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills including prioritizing multiple tasks
  • Travel approximately 15 - 20 days (may include international travel)
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and think independently while working in a dynamic team environment
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community
